Rules for completing this course

You must complete 144 credit points, comprising: - Part C. Core specialist studies (108 credit points); - Part D. Professional practice (0 credit points); and - Part E. Elective studies (36 credit points).

Part C. Core specialist studies

108 cp

You must complete 108 credit points, comprising: - the following 15 units (90 credit points); - one unit from Core list A (6 credit points); - one unit from Core list A or Core list B (6 credit points); and - one unit (6 credit points) from the Professional Practice domain list Note: If you complete ECE2072 in your Part B First Year breadth studies, it will count towards your electrical and computer systems engineering study. You must still fulfil the First Year breadth studies requirement by completing another breadth studies unit.

Core list A

6 cp

You must complete one unit (6 credit points) from the following list. Note: Malaysia campus students: you must complete ECE4053 to satisfy the accreditation requirements of the Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) Malaysia.

  • ECE4053Power system analysis6 cp
  • ECE4055Power electronic converters for modern power systems6 cp
  • ECE4122Advanced electromagnetics6 cp
  • ECE4886Smart grids6 cp

Core list B

6 cp

You must complete one unit (6 credit points) from the following list or from Core list A not already completed. Note: To enrol in a Level 5 unit listed below, you must obtain a weighted average mark (WAM) of 65 or above.

  • ECE4024Wireless communications6 cp
  • ECE4032Advanced control6 cp
  • ECE4043Optical communications6 cp
  • ECE4044Telecommunications protocols6 cp
  • ECE4045Network performance6 cp
  • ECE4086Medical imaging technology6 cp
  • ECE4087Medical technology innovation6 cp
  • ECE4146Multimedia technologies6 cp
  • ECE4808Microsystems and semiconductor fabrication6 cp
  • ECE4809Solid state lighting6 cp
  • ECE4058Electrical energy - high voltage engineering6 cp
  • ECE4063Integrated circuit design6 cp
  • ECE4075Real time embedded systems6 cp
  • ECE4076Computer vision6 cp
  • ECE4078Intelligent robotics6 cp
  • ECE4081Medical instrumentation6 cp
  • ECE4810Internet of Things: Communication, data and security6 cp
  • ECE5156Grid integration of renewable energy resources6 cp
  • ECE5881Real-time system design6 cp
  • ECE5882Advanced electronics design6 cp
  • ECE5883Advanced signal processing6 cp

Professional Practice domain

6 cp

You must complete 6 credit points from the following units

  • ENG4801Professional practice (Curriculum embedded)6 cp
  • ENG4802Professional practice (Student teams)6 cp
  • ENG4803Professional practice (Industry experience)6 cp
  • ENG4804Professional practice (Co-operative education)6 cp

Part D. Professional practice

Continuous professional development is a crucial part of meeting the requirements to be a Professional Engineer. Clayton campus students: To meet the Engineers Australia Stage 1 Competency Standard to be a Professional Engineer you must enrol in ENG0001 in your final year and satisfy the professional development requirements. Malaysia campus students: To meet the Engineering Accreditation Council Malaysia industrial training requirements to be a Professional Engineer, you must enrol in ENG0002 in the second semester of your third year and complete the industrial training.

  • ENG0001Engineering continuous professional development0 cp
  • ENG0002Industrial training0 cp

Part E. Elective studies

36 cp

You must complete 36 credit points, comprising: - In year 2: 12 credit points at Level 1, 2 or 3 from the Faculty of Engineering or other faculties; - In years 3 and 4: 24 credit points at Level 3, 4 or 5 from the Technical electives list. Note 1: Electives must be completed at the required unit level to satisfy the course requirements. Note 2: You may use your elective studies to complete an engineering minor, or any unit from an engineering minor, that will complement your specialisation. If you select a single unit you must ensure you meet the unit prerequisites or co-requisite rules. This will allow you to tailor your studies and broaden your knowledge within the field of engineering while still aligning with your chosen specialisation. Note 3: You may enrol in up to two units (12 credit points) at Level 5. To be eligible to enrol in Level 5 units, you must obtain a weighted average mark (WAM) of 65 or above at the conclusion of Level 3 and be in your final year of study. If you intend to enrol in the Master of Engineering, completing Level 5 units that are core in the Master's course will reduce the total duration of your Master's study. Double degree students are not required to complete this Part. The 36 credit points of technical electives have been credited towards the double degree structure and therefore are not a requirement in the double degree courses.
