What it covers
This unit provides foundations for the electrical engineering areas of control, signal processing and communications. The unit introduces continuous-time and discrete-time signals and methods to analyse the effect that linear time-invariant (LTI) systems have on signals. Signals and systems are considered from the time- and frequency-domain points of view. The unit covers time-domain representations of discrete- and continuous-time LTI signals, the impulse response representation of linear time-invariant systems, and the convolution formula. In the frequency domain, signals are represented via Fourier series, Fourier transforms, and Laplace and Z-transforms. LTI systems are represented via the frequency response and the transfer function, and input-output relationships for LTI systems in the frequency domain are covered. The unit covers sampling and aliasing, including the effect of sampling and reconstruction in the frequency domain. Tools to construct FIR filters with desired frequency response are introduced, allowing you to design filtering and denoising systems from a frequency-domain perspective.
