What it covers
This unit asks the question: how might we live otherwise? With the concepts of borders and social boundaries as a focus, you will examine the histories, processes, and structures that divide and connect people, shaping access to land, mobility, and belonging. You will also explore contested ideas about change: how do cultural contexts, ways of knowing, and storytelling influence understanding, action, and possible futures? The unit is structured around a research and communication project that enables you to build on the knowledge and skills developed throughout your degree and engage with methods that privilege situated, community-based and narrative knowledge. You will explore different experiences of borders and boundaries, and develop your own area of inquiry, identifying a relevant issue (from displacement to detention to gentrification) for further investigation. In dialogue with peers, and with perspectives beyond the university, you’ll produce a public communication piece: what would a different future look like, and who needs to see it?
