What it covers
In this unit you will explore how ordinary people experience and address inequalities of gender, race and class through everyday acts, social movements, and collective action. You will examine how social divisions and hierarchies are produced in different contexts, how they structure the world and our lives, and the ways different groups have resisted and reframed them. Studying a range of social movements, particularly feminist, anti-racist and anti-capitalist movements, you will gain a deep understanding of agency and collective action. You will also learn to make sense of seemingly conflicting needs and approaches across historical, linguistic, cultural and geographical settings, and to reflect on your own positioning and beliefs. By examining manifestos, speeches, posters and art forms, you will further develop your skills in analysis, interdisciplinary research and collaboration, and be able to communicate how and why a group of people come together to drive change.
