Chemical engineering

Available in Bachelor of Engineering (Honours), Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and Bachelor of Biomedical Science, Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science, Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)

Rules for completing this course

You must complete 144 credit points, comprising: - Part C. Core specialist studies (108 credit points); - Part D. Professional practice (0 credit points); and - Part E. Elective studies (36 credit points).

Part C. Core specialist studies

108 cp

You must complete 108 credit points, comprising: - the following units (102 credit points); and - one unit (6 credit points) from the Professional Practice domain list. Note 1: If you complete CHM1011, CHM1051 or CHE2161 in your Part B First Year breadth studies, it will count towards your chemical engineering study. You must still fulfil the First Year breadth studies requirement by completing another breadth studies unit. Note 2: E3008 Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)/Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science double degree students - you must replace CHM1011/CHM1051 with one Level 3, 4 or 5 chemical engineering unit from CHE3172, CHE5322, CHE5882, CHE5883, CHE5889, due to overlapping content with BPS1031/BPS1032. Note 3: You can complete only one of CHM1011 or CHM1051.

Professional Practice domain

6 cp

You must complete 6 credit points from the following units

  • ENG4801Professional practice (Curriculum embedded)6 cp
  • ENG4802Professional practice (Student teams)6 cp
  • ENG4803Professional practice (Industry experience)6 cp
  • ENG4804Professional practice (Co-operative education)6 cp

E3008 Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)/Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science - IMPORTANT INFORMATION

6 cp

As per Note 2 under Core specialist studies, you must complete 6 credit points from the units below. This unit is to replace CHM1011/CHM1051 due to overlapping contents with BPS1031/BPS1032

  • CHE3172Nanotechnology and materials 16 cp
  • CHE5322Advanced biochemical engineering6 cp
  • CHE5882Biomass and biorefineries6 cp
  • CHE5883Nanostructured membranes for separation and energy production6 cp
  • CHE5889Food engineering and processing6 cp

Part D. Professional practice

Continuous professional development is a crucial part of meeting the requirements to be a Professional Engineer. Clayton campus students: To meet the Engineers Australia Stage 1 Competency Standard to be a Professional Engineer you must enrol in ENG0001 in your final year and satisfy the professional development requirements. Malaysia campus students: To meet the Engineering Accreditation Council Malaysia industrial training requirements to be a Professional Engineer, you must enrol in ENG0002 in the second semester of your third year and complete the industrial training.

  • ENG0001Engineering continuous professional development0 cp
  • ENG0002Industrial training0 cp

Part E. Elective studies

36 cp

You must complete 36 credit points, comprising: - In year 2: 12 credit points at Level 1, 2 or 3 from the Faculty of Engineering or other faculties; - In years 3 and 4: 24 credit points at Level 3, 4 or 5 from the Technical electives list. Note 1: Electives must be completed at the required unit level to satisfy the course requirements. Note 2: You may use your elective studies to complete an engineering minor, or any unit from an engineering minor, that will complement your specialisation. If you select a single unit you must ensure you meet the unit prerequisites or co-requisite rules. This will allow you to tailor your studies and broaden your knowledge within the field of engineering while still aligning with your chosen specialisation. Note 3: You may enrol in up to two units (12 credit points) at Level 5. To be eligible to enrol in Level 5 units, you must obtain a weighted average mark (WAM) of 65 or above at the conclusion of Level 3 and be in your final year of study. If you intend to enrol in the Master of Engineering, completing Level 5 units that are core in the Master's course will reduce the total duration of your Master's study. Double degree students are not required to complete this Part. The 36 credit points of technical electives have been credited towards the double degree structure and therefore are not a requirement in the double degree courses.
