What it covers
Interaction between the learners and educators as well as interactions among the learners is central to learning, whether it occurs through group work, synchronous classes online or in person, social media or other shared digital environments. Learning designers need to understand how social dynamics, learning contexts, technologies and modes of delivery influence participation, interaction, collaboration and learning outcomes. Using theories of collaborative learning and interaction, this unit explores the design, facilitation and evaluation of social and collaborative learning experiences. You will examine when and why collaborative approaches are appropriate and how learning activities can be designed for synchronous, asynchronous, onsite, online and hybrid environments. You will also critically examine the affordances and limitations of educational technologies including AI for enabling interaction and collaboration. This includes considering how technology choices can shape participation, accessibility, communication, group dynamics and the overall learner experience.
