What it covers
In this unit, you will explore the role of translation in shaping our interconnected and changing world. While translation is essential to the movement of people, texts, ideas and goods, it is often overlooked or understood as a straightforward word-for-word exchange. You will examine translation in everyday, professional and creative settings, analysing choices and norms, and their social and political significance. You’ll draw on the perspectives of a multilingual cohort to consider translation beyond your own language pairing, while also developing applied skills in language-specific streams. Working with a range of text types, from public health communication to literary texts, you’ll practise translation, enhance your language skills, and collaboratively workshop responses to cultural, linguistic and ethical challenges. You’ll critically engage with theory and technologies to develop a reflexive and adaptable approach to translation as intercultural mediation.
