What it covers
The unit focuses on theories of race and issues of ethnicity, prejudice and racism, with particular emphasis on the continuities and discontinuities of discourses on 'race' in Australia; language use in a multicultural context; the uses of opinion polls; the representation of Indigenous people in the media and other forms of popular culture; multiculturalism and Indigenous people. Race and racism are not confined to any one discipline; they are not just historical, sociological or economic phenomena, for example. All of these disciplines (and others as well) inform studies of race. Taking an interdisciplinary approach to these topics enables the students to consider race and racism from different angles, and to think with precision about issues which may otherwise appear nebulous or difficult to define.
