What it covers
This unit examines Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) as a multidisciplinary field that brings together design, media studies, communication, cultural theory, and critical technology studies to understand the reciprocal relationship between humans and digital systems. Rather than viewing interfaces as purely functional or technical tools, the unit explores how they shape communication, behaviour, knowledge production, participation, and everyday experiences. You will critically examine the social, cultural, political, and ethical implications of digital technologies, including artificial intelligence, algorithms, social media, and emerging interfaces. By combining foundational HCI principles with contemporary critical perspectives, you will be equipped to analyse, evaluate, and design digital technologies that are inclusive, ethical, and responsive to complex societal challenges.
