ACMT-EXTN · Extended major · 72 credit points
Applied and computational mathematics
Available in Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Science Advanced - Global Challenges (Honours), Bachelor of Science Advanced - Research (Honours)
Rules for completing this course
You must complete: - a maximum of four units at Level 1 (24 credit points); and - a minimum of four units at Level 3 (24 credit points). Applied and computational mathematics extended major requirements You must complete 72 credit points, comprising: - 42 credit points of Core units; - 24 credit points of Additional units; and - 6 credit points of Elective units.
Elective unit
6 cpYou must complete one unit (6 credit points) from the following list, or from the Additional units list above (not already completed). Note: If you meet the prerequisites, you may consider replacing MTH3110 and MTH3170 with their advanced units: MTH3115 and MTH3175.
Core units
42 cpYou must complete the following units: Note 1: You complete one of MTH2140 or MTH3140. Note 2: If you meet the prerequisites, you may consider replacing MTH1030, MTH2010 and MTH2021 with their advanced units: MTH1035, MTH2015 and MTH2025. Note 3: For Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Computer Science (S2004) double degree students, you must complete MAT1830 or FIT1058 instead of the core unit MTH1110. Note 4: For Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and Bachelor of Science (E3007) double degree students, you must complete ENG1005 Engineering Mathematics and ENG2005 Engineering Mathematics (Advanced) instead of the core units MTH1030/MTH1035 and MTH2010/MTH2015, respectively. Note 5: MTH2051 has a corequisite requirement of SCI1022, FIT1045, FIT1053 or ENG1060. If you do not have basic coding skills, you are strongly encouraged to complete one of these units. However, these units do not count towards the requirements of this extended major.
Additional units
24 cpYou must complete four units (24 credit points) from the following list. Note: If you meet the prerequisites, you may consider replacing MTH3020 with its advanced unit: MTH3025.
- MTH3360Fluid dynamics6 cp
- MTH3000Mathematics research project level 36 cp
- MTH3011Partial differential equations6 cp
- MTH3020Complex analysis and integral transforms6 cp
- MTH3060Advanced ordinary differential equations6 cp
- MTH3320Computational linear algebra6 cp
- MTH3330Optimisation and operations research6 cp
- MTH3340Numerical methods for partial differential equations6 cp
Advanced units
If you meet the prerequisites, you may consider replacing the corresponding units listed above with one or more of the following advanced units.
Core unit substitutions for double degrees
Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and Bachelor of Science (E3007) - You must complete ENG1005 Engineering Mathematics and ENG2005 Engineering Mathematics (Advanced) instead of the core units MTH1030 or MTH1035 and MTH2010 or MTH2015, respectively. - ENG1005 and ENG2005 count towards the requirements of the extended major; however, they do not contribute to the 96 credit points of Science units required for the Bachelor of Science. Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Computer Science (S2004) - You must complete MAT1830 or FIT1058 instead of the core unit MTH1110. - MAT1830 or FIT1058 counts towards the requirements of the extended major; however, they do not contribute to the 96 credit points of Science units required for the Bachelor of Science.
